So, I used to be Operations Manager for a Landscape Yard. (The place you go to get mulch, stone, grass seed, etc). It was a small company, about 20 people total. I was directly under the 4 family owners, appointed for them to handle daily operations and some administrative tasks they needed to delegate. Preface: We had a fairly big lot, and in the summer we let a produce stand set up in our parking lot. It was mutually beneficial to both of us as businesses. In the winter, they obviously packed up and left. So I was in my office one day, working on the schedule for the next week. Our offices are in a separate building from the store, but still on the property. One of our part time employees radioed me that there was a problem customer in the store becoming belligerent. Now I'm a big guy, so as little as I had to do it, "Security" was one of my job functions. I walked over to the store and walked in to a lady (EK) screaming at me. She demanded to talk to the manager, to which I replied "You got him. What seems to be the problem today?" EK: "This kid is lying to me! I'm trying to find the corn and he says you don't sell that! I've bought it here before several times" Me: "I'm sorry Ma'am, are you referring to the decorative cornstalks we sell during the fall?" EK: "NO! Corn on the Cob! I always buy it here!"
I wasn't even thinking of the produce stand at first, so I told her we never sold corn on the cob in our store. We sold Landscape Materials, not produce. EK: "Bullshit! I Buy it every year here from your tent!"
Well then it clicked. Me: "Ma'am, that is a produce stand that is only here during the summer. We don't sell their product, it's a separate business. They do have a year round market, I can give you their address if you'd like?"
Apparantly not the right answer. She threw an absolute tantrum, demanded our corporate number (We don't have a corporate, It's a locally owned small business, I am the closest she's getting to corporate.) I eventually told her I offered her the address, she can behave like an adult or leave and never come back.
"DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH MONEY I SPEND HERE?!"
Me: "Well, If you give me your name I can pull up your account and tell you exactly how much you've ever spent here. But I'm here everyday, and I've never seen you before. So I'm guessing it isn't much."
"I'M NEVER SHOPPING HERE AGAIN!"
Me: "Ma'am, we do over $5000 in sales per day in our SLOW season. While I'm sorry you feel this way, I'm going to help you. Get out and don't come back.
"BUT WHERE WILL I GET MY MULCH IN THE SPRING! I HAVE GARDEN BEDS!"
Me: "That's not my problem. Unlike major retailers, I'm not going to allow you to come in here, act belligerent and scream and rave at my staff. They deserve a lot better than putting up with you, and I'd be a horrible boss if I made them. Now you have 2 options: Get Out, or I have the police escort you out."
Apparantly the thought of the police didn't help her much, and she left. I then told the owners what happened, and they gave our part time staff a commendation. I also bought the kid lunch. He was 16 at the time. At no point should he ever have to deal with that.
