Thereā€™s nothing wrong with ā€œabnormalā€ though. The definition of abnormal is ā€œdeviating from the normal or averageā€. Professional athletes have abnormal levels of strength for example. If you just replaced normal with ā€œaverageā€ or ā€œcommonā€, doesnā€™t that put us back in the same argument? A specific animal is not always a positive evolutionary adaptation too. In some cases, the genetic variance results in a trait that reduces an animals likelihood of survival and thus gets selected out over time. I suppose that I could see how there might be some negative connotations, but are we supposed to ignore that some variants are more common than others?
