What does "due diligence" mean in this context? : People have to exercise due diligence and watch what's being bought on their credit cards.

When I google it, all I can find is the definition that is used in law with one exception which is:
"action that is considered reasonable for people to be expected to take in order to keep themselves or others and their property safe"
But I don't know with which word I could replace it if I wanted to use a synonym instead of it.
