Is this an appropriate ring to propose with, or should I buy one?

Post Body

Hello, everyone. I’m planning to propose to my partner later this spring. I’ve been looking at amethyst engagement rings, as that is my partner’s birthstone and their favorite color as well. When I mentioned this to my parents, my mom offered me an amethyst ring that belonged to my grandmother. It’s a lovely ring, and I’m very grateful to my mom for offering, but I’m not sure if it is appropriate as an engagement ring. I’m having it cleaned and appraised, but I wanted to see what others think. Should I propose with this ring, or purchase one? The ring is 14k yellow gold with an 8mm diameter round amethyst. My partner has mentioned in the past that they have no preference on white vs. yellow gold, gem cut, gem type, or gem size.
