Really need to spice up my private games

Me and a few other friends love es2 but the majority of my friends that I play it with only play it just because it's a fun thing we're all doing for the next few hours. But inevitably it turns into everyone hunkering down for an extremely boring few hours of empire building and isolationism. I've lowers map size but I still need other ways to spice things up, wether it be in game settings or not.
