At a tipped restaurant-
Scenario 1
Menu item cost $20 Service was fantastic so you tip 20% Less taxes total is $24 Server is rewarded for their effort which in return creates a reinforcement cycle to incentivize good service.
Scenario 2
Menu item cost $20 Service sucked so you tip $0 Less taxes total is $20 Server is punished for poor quality of service and is incentivized to improve or find new profession
At a NON tipped restaurant-
In order to maintain staff, all menu items are increased by 20%
Menu item is now $24 Less taxes you pay $24 regardless or quality of services received. Servers are no longer enticed to provide quality service but are paid as if they did.
Is it really lost on so many of you that by not incentivizing good service everyone suffers? If you get bad service great just donât tip and maybe that server will do better next time, and if they donât they wonât make any money.
By âending tippingâ all youâre doing is ENSURING that you will pay a bad server at a non tipped restaurant the same as great server at a tipped restaurant.
One thing thatâs integral to tipping is the reinforcement. Some get large tips based on the size of the bill which you clearly noted. But there are times where the server will get a party of 10, with 3-4 separate bills and that server will take in $50-60. Itâs a misleading tip to tip20-22%, unless you let the server know, hey you did a great job. Most of us donât do that. We tip and go. So itâs necessary to let the waitstaff know why they received the tip they received.
