After the nuclear missiles hit America, the nation fell into chaos. Known by Kariforunia intellectuals as the Sengoku Jidai, the Age of Warring States. Brother fought against brother, father against son, families were broken and homes destroyed. In the old California it was the same, chaos ruled over the region and hundreds of thousands died before the Fukkō, the reconstruction. A humble warrior in the Sengoku Jidai inspired by ancient books of military prowess and sword fighting united his tribe and under an ancient code known as 'Bushidō'. This Bushidō was an ancient code of conduct, the way of the warrior, the way to be an honourable soldier in these dishonourable times. His tribe begun to pick up ancient ways of fighting from books the humble warrior had read, books such as 'Musashi', 'The Book of Five Rings', '47 Ronin', and 'Black Samurai'. They dressed in strange foreign armour and wielded foreign swords with odd curves, looking quite different from all the other warring tribes that inhabited the once United States. With their unique code of conduct and strange tactics, they begun to take over the region turning their tribe into a powerful military force. The once humble warrior of his tribe turned into a infamous warlord, making all fall to the blade of his sword.

Once the land around San Francisco and San Jose were conquered, the tribe evolved. No longer were they a group of disunited tribals, they formed a 'Shogunate', an ancient form of government that the humble warrior had read in one of his many books. They would be a nation ruled by what he called 'Samurai', warriors who devoted their lives to Bushidō and fought to protect the weak. Eventually, people begun to migrate to his Shogunate, including many Neo-Japanese immigrants who were stuck in America after the missiles struck. With the help of the Neo-Japanese people, the humble warrior begun to embrace the syncretic culture of the region. Something he dubbed 'Kariforunian' after the Japanese word for California. Soon everything followed, the Shogunate became the 'Kariforunia Bakufu', a more accurate translation of 'The California Shogunate'. Once the Shogunate had been fully established and order ruled over the region, the humble warrior disappeared into thin air. Some say he became a hermit, others say he ascended into heaven. All that is known is that he appointed a close friend of his, Greg Thompson to the the role of Shogun who ascended to the title as 'Mitsubishi Taki', the Three Diamonds. With the ascension of Mitsubishi, an era of 'American Shinto' begun, local deities and saints were included and even the humble warrior became synonymous with Hachiman, the Kami of war.

Now, the Shogunate rules over it's provinces, localising the nation into the Kariforunian culture and language, a creole of Japanese and English. Hopefully the era of American Shinto will never come to an end, for it is an era of prosperity and respect. Only time will tell, but for now the Shogunate remains strong!
