Where to start with Horus Heresy?

Hey everyone, I want to get Horus Heresy Emperor's Children but I am not sure where to begin. I was thinking of getting the Age of Darkness box but it doesn't come with the Emperor's Children upgrades so I wouldn't be able to build and paint the marines and dreadnaught for a while. I am a student so I don't have much of an income and would likely rely on Christmas gifts to get Age of Darkness. Should I get the shoulder pads and upgrades for the marines while I wait or just save up for the box first?
