Does anyone have experience hand embroidering very delicate antique pongee silk?

Post Body
I have a few kimono and clothing pieces from the 1920s. They're made of pongee silk. Some have little flaws that I want to cover with embroidery. Maybe even add beading. I'm very new to embroidery. My concern is that the silk will split when I'm embroidering. Does anyone know how I can go about this? Do I use some sort of backing, and if so, what is the absolute best, top quality kind? Is there a certain type of needle that would be best? Thank you
