Hi everyone, I am not sure if this post is allowed here or not. If its not, please let me know and I will remove it.
I just wanted to share with the subreddit a cool experience I had over the weekend. This is a image of what it was. Sadly, I couldn't capture any images of the insides of the interesting part because its kept in vacuum and at high voltage. And when I say high voltage, I mean 14 million volts as mentioned in the title.
Basically what this lab was doing is basically what Mehdi was also doing, but just on a super large scale. The main accelerator hall houses a enormous van der graaff generator (inside the orange tank thing) and instead of stockings like Mehdi uses, they have a massive chain that carries the charges to the terminal. This is then used to accelerate particles (protons, alpha particles, heavy ions...) for experiments.
Personally, I was using a 22 MeV proton beam for experiments. This beam line has massive quadrupole magnets to guide and to focus the beam. This beam line was designed to run for many hours non-stop but as a result a lot of the components (like the magnets and the faraday cup used to measure the particle beam) are radioactive. Additionally, when conducting experiments with protons, you cannot be in the experiment hall due to the radiation that protons spit out when then smash into your experimental target. The sheer size of the equipment and the tons of electronics are a sight to behold and this certainly will not be an experience I will forget.
Once again, if this post does not belong here, please let me know and I will take it down.
