PoliticoBailey was at the Toronto High Park today at a crucial point in the election, drawing crowds of voters eager to hear why they should elect a Pirate voice to Parliament
Hello, Toronto! Thank you for coming to hear me speak today, and it’s always great to be able to talk about why I am best placed to be your next Member of Parliament. We’re working day and night to convince people to vote for the Pirate Party, and those efforts won’t stop throughout this campaign. I believe that the Pirate platform in this election is the most ambitious, the most forward-looking, and the plan most fit to tackle the issues that Canada faces.
Because that’s what Toronto needs. A Member of Parliament, and a Government, that is laser-focused on providing the adequate solutions to Canada’s modern-day challenges. That also means doing politics differently, which is the guiding principle that the Pirates will govern upon if we’re chosen to lead the next federal Government. We aren’t focused on one sole issue, rather the opposite. We have a detailed foundation of policies that we would start working on from day one as your Government - and I hope that as your Member of Parliament, I would play a critical role in that work. Here’s what you can expect from a Pirate Government that will govern in the interests of Toronto:
We’re the only party that believes in empowering the Canadian people. Politicians from various parties may say they’re giving the Canadian people a voice, but it’s only the Pirate Party that has a comprehensive plan to make that a tangible part of our democratic process - it’s not a meaningless slogan to us. One of the policies that is a notable part of our agenda is our longstanding and unwavering commitment to Direct Democracy, and yes the Pirate Party will seek to re-introduce the Direct Democracy Bill - we are completely unequivocal about that fact. This will lay out a framework for National Popular Initiatives and the means for the people of Toronto, and the wider Canadian population, to have their say through democratic referendums. When we say we’ll be doing politics differently, we mean it and have the policies to prove it.
The Pirate Party is also one of the only ambitious voices when dealing with Climate Change and offering solutions which will build the greener environment of the future - and I know that firsthand as someone who served as Minister of Energy, Environment and Climate Change. Under the leadership of /u/model-avtron, we introduced one of the most ambitious statutory targets in the world for reaching net zero emissions, bringing forward the target date to 2038 from 2050. Moving forward, we have a large number of different plans that can make us world leaders in this area, because when we in the Pirate Party say we’ll be doing politics differently, we’ll deliver the green of the future.
And thirdly we’re the only party offering a transformative agenda for delivering a Canadian healthcare system which works and serves the interests of every Citizen. Whether it’s developing a federal strategy for mental health, that introduces fairer and more accessible support for students and first responders, or whether it’s phasing out private involvement in healthcare. We’re committed to reform that builds the adequate institutions of the future that deliver upon the needs of every Toronto and Canadian citizen. Our work would go further here as well, with a commitment to transitioning towards Universal Pharmacare that leaves no one behind. When we say we’ll be doing politics differently, we’ll deliver the reform necessary for a society that delivers for every family and community.
The race in Toronto here will be close between myself and the Liberal Party candidate. I believe that throughout this campaign, I’ve shown why I would be a proactive and effective Member of Parliament - who’ll actually speak up on the issues that affect the residents of Toronto. I hope you’ll consider voting for me in the coming days. Meanwhile, please take a leaflet and feel free to scan the QR code to read our platform.
