How/When did you learn the 'basics'?

I was thinking about this when I saw another post about a new player trying to beat Margot.
One of the top comments was very insightful but had stuff like "heavy roll" in it without clearly explaining the why of why the rolls were slow.
That got me thinking about how I learned and honestly I had mostly learned all this stuff from Game Grumps DS3 play through before I even touched a souls like or from soft game.
How did all of you figure out some of the basic stuff that people miss?
