Why did Margit die?

He had less than 25% health left before just spontaneously dying. Been stuck on him for awhile, and I'm glad it's over, but it feels extremely undeserved. I have no effects equipped that'd cause this, and he didn't fall off the cliff. Any clue what could've happened here?
