Just started Elden ring need help with combat and parrying Xbox controller on PC

So iv just started the game and its going pretty good I chose the “hero” class and I like it so far, but no matter how many time I try, I just cannot get the combat down, and I can’t for the life of me parry, and I thought it would be useful to ask for help
