Help painting Avatar

Hello fellow craftworlders. I'm currently painting my Avatar of Khaine and was hoping to pick people's brains on painting the flames and flesh. I'm experimenting at the minute but trying to go for a lighter effect than the box depicts. Does anyone have any advice and or pics that would help? I want it as the centerpiece of my army so I'm desperate to get it as good as I can. I'm old school and don't airbrush so secrets of the brush would be greatly appreciated.
