It's me again, back at it again to shed light on the downward spiral that r/EdmontonR4R has been going though lately. This isn't the first time I've brought attention to this matter. I made a similar post on Friday last week with basically the same message, but it bears repeating.
Scammers and low effort posts have been plaguing this sub since the reddit boycott. I don't know what happened during the downtime, but all I know is that there weren't many scams before, then after, they make up most of the posts. Coincidence? I think NOT! The majority of these fake posts are [F4M] in attempts to sucker in horny guys, but I've noticed since my last post that a growing number of fake posts are [M4M] [M4A] [M4F]. Many of these posts are low effort, only having a title and "hmu" in the actual post. These kinds of posts are becoming more frequent, and I believe will drive away genuine people from posting.
I'd like to make aware to all the real, genuine people who post on this subreddit, there are rules set in place to keep us in check, and many of these posts blatantly violate the rules in order to get your attention. I ask that every member read and become familiar with these rules as they browse r/EdmontonR4R , as it makes it very easy to distinguish serious posts from scam posts.
Here are a few rules I want to personally address (In no particular order):
Rule 5: Contact Information
Many scam posts may include their other social media such as Snapchat, Discord, Telegram, Kik, WhatsApp, I've even seen phone numbers. If a post includes any form of other contact information other that Reddit DMs, do not contact them, they are likely a scam.
Rule 3: No Exchanges for Sex
The bread and butter of any scam is trying to get money out of you. Scammers will ask for all sorts of things in order to swindle money out of your pocket. These include (and are not limited to)
- Booking fees
- Gas Money
- Subscriptions
- Giftcards (Apple, Google pay, Steam, etc.)
I'd like to draw extra attention to the topic of giftcards. Giftcards are one of the most common ways scammers can take your money. Often times, scammers will ask you to go to a store to buy things like "Condoms" or "Lube", just to say "Also get me a $50 Apple gift card". If anyone you're talking to asks you to send them anything in regards to what I've mentioned above, do not send anything. They will take your money and run.
Rule 4: Too Many Ads
A simple rule. If you see someone making multiple posts in a short time frame, be suspicious.
Rule 6: Ad Formatting
This rule is meant to filter out low effort posts. Any genuine post will provide details about themselves. Things like age, height, weight, body type, if they can host or travel. These things are great indicators that a post is authentic. If a post has a title and little or no content in the actual post, just ignore it.
New accounts (Not a rule, but something I want to comment on)
The vast majority of scam posts are made on brand new profiles, usually made on the same day. If you see an account make a post, and he account was made the same day, be suspicious.
With all that being said, what can you do to help stop the influx of scams? REPORT THEM! I know this doesn't sound like a great solution, but it's the best we have without getting mod staff involved. If you see a post with any of the qualities I listed in this post, report them immediately. Yes, the scammers might just make another burner account and post again, but if nobody reports then, the scams stay visible. By reporting these kinds of posts, we can help prevent other users from seeing these scam posts and potentially prevent someone from losing money. As someone who has fallen for these types of scams in the past, I want to make it known to the public that these kinds of threats are lurking, waiting for an unknowing horny person to send them money. I don't know how much good this post will do, but if I can prevent even one scammer from taking someone's money, I'll call that a job well done. I remember when this subreddit used to be better, when scam posts were an anomaly and not the norm. I've met multiple people from this subreddit, and I want to make it known that real people do exist on this subreddit, they're just being drown out by people who look at us and see dollar signs.
This is gonna seem like I'm biting the hand that feeds that feeds me, but I want to personally call out the mod staff of r/EdmontonR4R . u/InGenScientist and u/NorthRooster7305 . I'm sure you two are busy people with lives outside of moderating an r4r subreddit, but this is starting to get out of control. The fact that this has been an ongoing issue for over 2 months (June 14th being the last day of the reddit blackout) with nothing being done about it is insulting. This sub has an Auto-Moderator, but it has done nothing to stamp out these malicious posts. TLDR; Do something, ANYTHING about this.
This is the end of my post. I doubt the majority of people will read to the end after they see this post isn't [F4M], but to those who did read through it, thank you.
