Samorukov was drafted in the 3rd round, 84th overall in the 2017 draft. He wasn't a stand out player at the time, just another LHD in the pile. He was quickly signed to his ELC, which seemed odd at the time. Later round players often play out their junior careers before finally signing with the big team. For me, I just assumed it was another Chia thing. Maybe they had a good vibe from him, but it still felt early to be signing a player who hadn't shown much going into the draft.
And now we're here. He was lighting it up all season, reportedly solid defensively, and is continuing to lead the way in the OHL playoffs. This the diamond-in-the-rough type player that set teams over the top. He's probably still several years away from being in the NHL (if he even gets there, development is never linear), but he could be one of the most important draft picks for the Oilers, when it comes to depth picks.
