Reactive large dog owner here… who just returned from a walk after getting charged by two small breed vampire dogs and their owners behind on bikes.
We do a lot to limit the dangers with our dog, spending time with her to continue to help her adjust to people and other animals, halti and bungee leash, and a buzz/shock collar just in case which— we’ve only had to use very few times.
Do not let your dogs off leash on walking paths, and do not let them off leash if they do not have a strong recall! Today could’ve ended so much worse, but only suffered a minor bite, sore wrist and scraped knee. If she decided to retaliate, I would be the one at fault and she would’ve been put down. Felt so guilty giving her a shock because those hurt… but she’d already tripped my by that point and was off running so I did what I could do for damage control and she knows to leave it when her collar goes off.
She has tried to go after children, strollers, and other dogs before so we honestly try our very hardest to keep her safe and reduce stress so our walks can be fun and enriching, it just sucks when you do everything right and everything else is out of your control. Didn’t even get an apology.
Sorry for the rant, it’s just a never ending problem we’ve dealt with, I have no idea when people will get the memo.
