Can I put bud and butter into a Mason jar, in hot water and make canna butter?

I want to make my own edibles, but don't want to use my oven due to the smell. I saw a video online of someone putting bacon fat and bud in a Mason Jar, in hot water, then straining it thru cheese cloth and using it.
As you shouldn't believe everything on the internet is true (plus I want butter not bacon fat so I can make cookies), I figured I'd ask. Thanks!
