Thinking about starting my first locally sourced enclosed ecosphere with my daughter this weekend but as far as I know, aquatic plants don't really occur naturally in my area. Slimy, algae covered rocks are easy enough to get to, but I know that's not the same. Should/could I just buy a plant or two from Petco (if so what are some recommendations)? It kind of feels like I'm cheating, since I REALLY prefer to get everything in one spot (there's probably a word to describe it).
If the local public "lake" will allow it, I can get my dirt from there, as it's mostly decayed leaves from the surrounding trees. Should have good biodiversity, but I'm still not sure about the plantlife
In any case I will be using a gallon pickle jar, and can either use a vacant aquarium light or set up a small table in front of a window sill
