According to Commander James Simons, fictional character of Singer in The Ghost Fleet, Britain’s first trader partner before WWI was Germany, Germany biggest trading partners were its very neighbor and the US was Japan’s. I was wondering to what extent it was true for these countries and in general.
I guess it makes sense in Antique and Medieval history as trade may have been between neighbors at this time, which might have been competitors, rivals or enemies as well. But what about Contemporaneous history if I think about Falklands, Gulf wars?
This seems a very current question if, according to the FT, US-China nvestment flows belie political tensions
