Or atleast, they can be. Or maybe I got lucky... lol
but... I got 3 carving pumkins for the price of one ($4.99USD after halloween sale at Winn Dixie) totaled over 24lbs raw.
Put the whole pumpkin in oven for 20 min at 350 on a sheet pan, the pulled pumpkin out of oven to cool, cut in half and scooped seeds, sprinkled with sugar and baked for another hour on sheet pan.
Scooped all pumpkin meat out of the skin and pureed.
Did a blind taste test with the carving pumpkin vs the small baking pumpkin 3lbs, i purchased at publix for 4 bucks and no one could tell which was which.
Maybe it's not the best choice for everyone, but as someone who has 7 pumpkin pies to make before Thanksgiving, I was pretty excited to stock the freezer with multiple gallon bags of prepared and spiced pumpkin for $5 this far ahead of time.
Edited to add: I checked my receipt and was not charged tax on the pumpkin, they rang up as clearance produce. Someone brought to my attention that carving pumpkins may not be eligible for purchase with benefits, but that may vary from place to place.
