Firstly I have to admit I sort of fell into doing (one on one) ESL tutoring without having any qualifications for it beyond tutoring at university. Over the last couple of years I believe I’ve gotten quite good at it through a mix of research and trial and error. I work with children exclusively but sometimes struggle with pre-school children. I use games with all of the kids, but find it harder to keep up with the shorter attention span younger kids have (needing more games per lesson, playing games that require more energy on my part, etc)
So keeping all of that in mind, I need advice on how to teach a five year old who is also visually impaired. I had already explained my lack of experience with younger kids to the parents prior to finding out the child couldn’t see much at all. I feel like I got blindsided (no pun intended) because they didn’t tell me ahead of our trial lesson. I also tried to have a conversation after and suggest they might need someone who knows how to cater to his needs a lot better. The problem is we live in rural Turkey and there isn’t really anyone more qualified around. They are adamant that they want me to continue with their son. Does anyone here have any similar experiences? Or any game ideas for visually impaired pre school children learning ESL?
