Native English speaking middle school students getting offended if I come near them

Post Body

Hello! So with my position I’m required to work with entire EL population at the middle school Im at even the ones who are native English speakers. Most of my time is dedicated to the newcomer emerging ELs and the teachers can keep me updated on the others. But I lately I’ve had A LOT of pressure to get the ELs using Lexia in their ELA classes because the ELA teachers aren’t doing it. My supervisor is demanding I go into the ELA classes and get them on myself. Well I did that in one class yesterday and the issue is 1. Middle schoolers notice that I’m trying to get the Hispanic students (even if some of the ELs aren’t Hispanic) on a different program and they get very offended and push back , some refusing to open the program 2. They know me as the lady who works with the students who don’t speak English so I get a lot “What you think I can’t speak English?”

Any advice about this? I try and be as sensitive as possible but it’s just such an awkward situation. In March I get to do the English proficiency test and get accused of being all kinds of things — sigh, I just like teaching, this is exhausting.
