Question about The Crucible

I was in a jeopardy game in an English class and one question was "Who was the author of The Crucible?" I said, "Shakespeare." The teacher and everyone else in class overreacted and said, "SHAKESPEARE?!?!?!"
I always wondered why this was their response to my answer. Can someone please explain why the teacher and class overreacted?
