Is there a relationship between the diminutive “-y” and rhyming in English?
Post Body

I recently got a puppy and while playing with her, noticed that I was rhyming her name (“May” and “Bay”) and realized that I’ve done this my whole life with things (eg. “puppy” and “wuppy”, “silly” and “w/b/filly”, “froggy” and “woggy” - usually replacing the first letter with a “w” but sometimes with other letters and almost always in conjunction with the diminutive form [frog —> froggy]). I’m wondering if the rhyming amplifies the diminutive-ness? Is it something else entirely? Or is it just “a thing” that happens in English?
