I work in a branch within the public sector of NYC. I recently had a supervisor, who is two positions above me, approach me in front of about 10 peers of my position, and berate me in the center of a meeting room. The cause is that this supervisor disagrees with how I handled a situation a day prior, and instead of pulling to aside to explain that he believes I handled things incorrectly, he said things like “fuck you,” you’re a piece of a shit,” “you’re a fucking liar,” and it ended with him pointing at my chest saying “I’m writing you up.”
My coworkers saw the interaction but they didn’t hear every word as they were all preoccupied. However, there are 3 main witnesses, and after speaking with them, they were willing to back if I go forward with a complaint. Witness one overheard the ending of the conversation and a few of those remarks. Witness two states they didn’t hear much but saw how the supervisor was in my face and acting completely unprofessional and they have had problems with this same supervisor in the past themself. Witness three walked into the room at the very end, and when I went to a different room after this interaction, this witness observed this supervisor explaining to multiple other coworkers, including two supervisors, how terrible a worker I am, that I am “a piece of a shit” and “a fucking liar,” and destroying my reputation when I was no longer present.
This supervisor is known to act like this. He doesn’t to people of my position every year or so, and people just say “oh there he goes again,” as it’s expected to happen. However, I am fed up. He did something similar to me about 6 years ago but now I am done; I am past the point of chalking it up to “you know how he gets.” I want action. I want him to answer for acting like this, either by being transferred to a different building for creating such a hostile workplace environment, or something where he faces disciple. The more serious the better.
For anyone that has any knowledge or experience, do I have a case here? I have been told to make a federal EEO complaint as it will be taken more serious than a state level complaint, and especially more serious than a complaint with my agency as they can just sweep it under the rug like usual. Please, any insight is much, much appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance.
