Hi r/edm! Welcome to the next installment of the Weekly Featured Artist Post. Our featured artist this week is SOPHIE!
Scottish visionary producer SOPHIE is perhaps best known as one of the faces of the quirky âPC Musicâ movement alongside A.G. Cook. Her tracks feature detuned, hyperkinetic, plastic sound palettes that jarringly co-opt pop tropes for experimental purposes. SOPHIE has received widespread critical acclaim for her work from a diverse range of critics including praise from The Washington Post, Resident Advisor, Complex, and Pitchfork. Her talent had received artistic recognition by her peers as well, landing her production credits with Charli XCX, Vince Staples, Lady Gaga, Flume, and Cashmere Cat.
SOPHIEâs unique style of production has culminated in her 2018 album Oil of Every Pearlâs Un-Insides, featuring her signature subversive production palette across a range of sounds and styles. The single Faceshopping from the album overtly references SOPHIEâs experience as a male-to-female trans person, an identity rarely touched upon in mainstream EDM. Now with a truly complete album under her belt, SOPHIE is a strong candidate as one of the most innovative and forward-thinking producers of the decade. Check out a sampling of her music below.
