Discussion about subgenres shouldn’t be dismissed

This post is gonna piss off the people that are always commenting “wHy dO pEoPlE cArE aBoUt wHaT sUbGeNrE iT iS?”

Music is like langauge, there’s many different types, accents, dialects, and we categorize them all. Why can’t we do the same for music?

When we ask what language, I’m speaking, we would say English. We don’t care about if it’s Australian English, American English, or, Britain English, just that it’s English. And if it’s American English we don’t know if I’m from the south or north.

Take Losing It by FISHER and Chris Lake for example. The language is Edm, the accent is house , the dialect is tech house, and the neighborhood is big room / festival tech house. John summit tech house is in the (up for discussion) deep tech house neighborhood. Music that you can listen to and groove to for 8 hours in a club without getting tired (bored I’m not so sure). Every person speaks their language uniquely just like every song expresses their subgenre uniquely. Unless the artist explicitly expresses what the subgenre of their song is, we can never truly define the exact subgenre plus enhancers (festival, deep, minimal, speed) of a specific song.

HOWEVER, this shouldn’t stop us from discussing what we best think describes a song. I say that Losing it is bigroom tech house but someone else might disagree and say something else. I want to be able have that discussion without people telling me that I shouldn’t care about what subgenre it is and just enjoy the music. I enjoy the music so much that I want to know what it’s called so that I can find more music like it.

What do you think?

Comments

I think subgenre is a very important way of helping people navigate the scene to songs, producers and groups that are right for them and in the process connecting rising producers to those most likely to appreciate the sound.

Hatred of genre discourse is hatred of communication.
