Casually Considered #1

Post Body

For the first article of Casually Considered, I'll look at the card I used as an example when pitching this idea, [[Omen of the Hunt]]. The idea for this article is to discuss cards that entrenched players my quickly pass on, but could be the perfect card for a more casual or new player. I will go over five specific commanders who would like the card, as well as compare it to more widely recommended cards with similar effects.

3CMC Ramp has a special place in my heart, during spoiler season, I always keep my eyes open for the new common from each set because ramp is ESSENTIAL and 3CMC ramp always gives a little room for some extra oomph to make it more flavorful or synergistic so I figure the first article would be about one of my favorite cards from Theros Beyond Death.

Disclaimer: I an NOT saying that putting any card I talk about in your deck will make it better/stronger. I AM saying that there are a few reasons you might consider putting them in a deck. 1) Many of them may be of lower rarities and/or from recent sets, so they will be much easier to acquire for a newer player; they may even already have a few lying around. 2) Many of them may be on the cheaper side and will be much more affordable to buy en masse. 3) If you build with a preference towards theme more than power, like myself, you may consider them.

Stats acquired from EDHREC.

Omen of the Hunt- 1331 decks (1%) Most comparable card: Cultivate- 90118 (51%)

I feel like [[Cultivate]] is a good camparison seeing as they both are 3CMC and both give a little bonus, Cultivate will most likely be the same card i use for future 3CMC ramp as well.

Enchantment Matters: 1) [[Tuvasa the Sunlit]]. The MOST popular enchantment deck, although Omen of the Hunt only shows up in 78 out of 1141 where Cultivate shows up in 264 out of 1141. Neither are particularly large amounts, but where Cultivate gives you an extra land in hand, Omen of the Hunt will give you triggers, one of which will draw you a card and make Tuvasa larger, as well as being able to be cast at instant speed.

Because the main draw of Omen of the Hunt is its enchantment card type, the next two decks are also enchantment themes and thus, they offer the bonuses of triggering enchantment payoffs.

2) [[Estrid the Masked]]. While appearing with a 94% synergy score, Omen of the Hunt only has 23 out of 660 while Cultivate is showing up in 73 out of 660, and while you dont always get the draw off of Estrid like you do with Tuvasa, you are able to return it from the graveyard from time to time while Cultivate is just a one time use spell.

3) [[Karametra, God of Harvests]]. Karametra is the third most popular enchantment commander containing green, and while she does not specifically trigger off of enchantments or interact with them, the rest of the deck surely will, you are also able to sacrafice Omen of the Hunt to scry 2, this does two things, it can allow you to decide whether or not you want to cast a creature for the search or if you'd rather hold off because you dont want the shuffle, it also allows you to reduce your devotion when need be. On the flip-side, if your deck WANTS Karameta to be a creature, Omen of the Hunt will help get you there. Omen of the Hunt is in 11 out of 363, while Cultivate is in 89 out of 363.

Permanent Type Matters: 4) [[Muldrotha the Gravetide]]. Omen of the Hunt is in 48 out of 4607 decks, but Cultivate is showing up in 1244 out of 4607 decks. Muldrotha is a commander who cares about having permanents in the graveyard to recast, Omen of the Hunt gives her an enchantment target that ramps and can sacrafice itself to repeat the process, but Cultivate only gets used once and only will get you a single extra land in the hand as a bonus.

Sacrafice Matters: 5) [[Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest]]. Cultivate is showing up in 152 out 385 deck. Omen of the Hunt is showing up in ZERO decks for Mazirek. Zero. Mazirek gives 1/ 1 counters to your whole team whenever a permanent is sacraficed; Omen of the hunt would allow a Mazirek deck to ramp, scry, and pump all at instant speed, I would say that out classes the extra basic in hand.

Closing Remarks: I am NOT saying Omen of the Hunt is better than Cultivate; Cultivate just happens to be my preferred comparison and that in these decks, you may want to consider swapping out A card, not specifically THAT card for Omen of the Hunt.

I realized AFTER researching that the numbers I used for Tuvasa, Estrid, and Karametra were on the enchantment themes page and not the total decks page, this may skew the data slightly, but mostly likely in FAVOR of Omen of the Hunt.

This was my very first article, feedback would be greatly appreciated, did you enjoy it? Did I make mistakes? Do you agree? Disagree? What other commanders would you consider Omen of the Hunt for? What cards do you think I should CONSIDER doing next? I apologize if this was excessively long, i did not realize it would be so.

Thank you for reading.

TL;DR (Omen of the Hunt #/ Cultivate #) Total Over all (1331/90118) 177889 Tuvasa the Sunlit (78/ 264)1141 Estrid the Masked (23/ 73) 660 Karametra, God of Harvests (11/ 89) 363 Muldrotha, the Gravetide (48/ 1244) 4607 Makirek, Kraul Death Priest (0/ 152) 385
