So just to get it out of the way I'm an anarchist (obviously) and I don't really like cops for a multitude of reasons. I do realize that kids need to be taught about the police, but I have issues with the way many centers (including mine) go about it. It seems to me the narrative widely taught to kids is that police "catch bad guys", and in America at least that's just not accurate. I do not think it is good for us to be teaching kids that everyone arrested by the police is a bad person. Especially when the majority of arrests here are for drug use, and I personally don't think having an addiction should be a criminal offense. I really don't know a nuanced, age appropriate way to discuss the police with children, and I just don't feel comfortable teaching them the narrative my school pushes. What are your guy's thoughts? How do you talk with student's about the police?
I always say โthey try to make people follow the rules in our country.โ I hate cops personally but Iโm a nanny (former preschool teacher) and itโs not really my place to tell the kids everything I feel. I live in Minneapolis, and when George Floyd was murdered we had lots of discussions about how cops unfairly target POC, and we talk about racism generally from time to time.
