players not sprinting when auto-switched to

how the hell am i supposed to win games when my player doesn't sprint when he gets auto switched to. i just played a game where my opponent passed a long through ball halfway down the pitch, i get switched to Manolas (who has 81 sprint speed), i am holding down R2 sprint, and he's just jogging slowly, getting left in the dust. user error or EA bug?
