I got a friend who was curious about DnD because her brother played it, but he doesn't want to include her. She asked about it and i sugested if she wants i can DM her a session. she was interested to try it and asked other friends at the table if they wanted to join, it could be fun. one of them didn't want it and said so rudly and the other didn't wanted to try at first because she didn't knew what it was and doesn't play boardgames. i told her its not a boardgame and explained a bit. and she was still a bit reluctant and wanted to give it a try.
thing is they both don't know anything about DnD, so i was thinking to maybe start them out with what i call kids DnD, wich you can play at any time quick session. this means they don't have a detailed charactersheet. eg. what race do you want to be, dwarf, human, elf, ... and what class? fighter, ranger, wizard, sorcerer, etc... then depending on their background i give advantage rolls or disadvantage rolls. its for quick and easy one shots. On the other side of things, the girls who was more enthousiastic wanted to make a character, but i don't think the other girl will want to spend much time in making a sheet. which would give me two different playstyles.
i've done this before, but always with players who knew something of Dnd. this is the first time i got players who don't even know terms of AOE what a paladin is and other geekstuff.
how do i go about in helping them create a character? i fear if we do a session zero the other one will find it to much work.
next is how do i introduce them well to the world of Dnd? i'm an improv DM and most things pop up in my head and i draw thing while playing. This has always been my prefered style, because for some one shots its jsut hard to remember all names and relations of things, whilest its easier for me to remember such things if i invented them myself. I am a bit scared that i'll screw it up for them, because in some instances i have to look thing up and am afraid of losing interest in the game. i thought of making maps beforehand and bringing mini's but i don't have that large of papers that's why i usually also draw when dm'ing. mind that in the past 3 years i DM'd online and drew maps sending them fort with how everyone was locationed and proceeded to tell the story while screensharing with the pictures. this session will be in person though.
so TLDR:
1st:how do i go about in helping my friends create a character? i fear if we do a session zero one friend ,who is reluctant to play, will find it to much work.
2nd i'm an improv DM and can handle myself pretty well, but i don't know if this kind of style is good for beginners with zero experience. how do i go about this, do you have tips. should i create maps before hand to help them visualise?
3th: is there a good way to start their adventure that they would be "hooked"?
i just want to give them a good first experience, because with my gf it went not so well. mostly due to someone else , but with the second friend not being that interested and probably not want ing to rolplay very much i'm afraid i'll screw it up
