Hello everybody, I'm new here, 19, and looking to run a beginner, five man, campaign for some local guys at my Airsoft group who've always been interested, but I've only run a single campaign before and it went horribly between my newness and the players difficulty with participating, wanting to play on their phones or talk over me DM'ing instead. I won't say it wasn't my fault, I likely didn't engage them properly or offer the right style of campaign, but I'm trying to fix that. I proposed that since this is going to be a group of grown men with good heads on their shoulders, I would do my very best to allow multiple approaches to any particular situation, that way violence and fighting aren't the entire goal of the campaign; not just in the way of distracting with bards or a druid that can Animorph, but such as placing a dragon that speaks in a language they don't and letting them find an ancient book on it later, or lighting brazierres in abandoned fortresses to scare off a Drider lurking close to the surface. As such, I am loosely creating a story macguffin and concept for them to chase, along with destinations and goals they will "eventually" reach, but don't intend to push any particular route down my players throats. Do any experienced DM's wanna toss some extra wisdom down the line for a new guy?
