Advice for a new player who overthinks everything about character creation?

Post Body

Hi all,

I haven't played D&D since I was 16, and I'm 27 now. Just found out that a local game and comic book store has a group, so I'm trying to prepare a character! However, I overthink EVERYTHING. I just want to play someone I'd enjoy, but I'm scared of making hard decisions about the backstory and character because what if I regret it? What if I get bored of the character or want to make the character do something OUT of character?

How do you build a character in such a way that you feel you won't regret the decisions you made? Do you make a character who's like you? Do you take your own morals and values into account when making a character? Or do you just go with whatever intrigues/interests you? Any advice is welcome! Thanks!
