Elder Runes or other Secrets to Discover?

Post Body

So there are a couple things I've been thinking about. I havent delved very deep into the Dungeon as a DM yet, however a few things have been pricking my curiosity, or make me think of things:

1) Has anyone ever made their own "Homebrewed" Elder Runes to place in the Dungeon on Gates? Just to spice it up or have different effects so its not the same stuff?

2) For the "Secret Cards" that are to be handed out when PC's hang out in the Yawning Portal, how have you introduced it? Do you just have a random NPC talking about it? An adventurer claiming to have went down and come back to tell the tale? I'm just not sure how else one would bring it up, or even possibly roleplay it out of the PC's try to inquire more about the secret (again, I fail as a DM for not having read the book. I sort of progress through it level by level; no use in reading up about level 20 if they can't get through the first level you know?)

3) Any other "secrets" you have put out into the dungeon? I know one such one I want to do, which is sort of like a teleporting bar that jumps from level to level randomly. So while its "safe" for PC's to hang out in, staying for too long might result in you jumping to a different level in which case you were NOT ready for AT ALL. My players seem to like "random" things (I had made a casino in the City of the Dead in Waterdeep and the players loved the idea of the barkeep just having random barrels of booze and not knowing what was in it). I also considered like maybe a "Monster Hunter" type of thing so that PC's can maybe break off from pure exploring and just go on a hack and slash adventure (or if not everyone is available, maybe something to do to pass the time)

I'm curious to hear what others have done, and hope to inspire some fun chats and maybe find unique things to add. Be gentle, cause this is my first time DMing (been DMing since Summer of 2019, so still VERY new and lack a lot of self confidence in my own ability. Hell, I don't even do voices >.<)
