[Advice] Fudging Rolls

Post Body

So, we have all had those times where a roll by the DM could absolutely destroy a party. I recently had my party going up against a Beholder and a party wipe was imminent. Beholder rolled a Nat20 but I decided not to take it. I know that part of the game is the risk of death when going up against a grave threat, but I felt somewhat invested in the characters that my team had made. Is this appropriate or should I just let the pieces fall where they may?
