I was a forever DM until we started our west marches campaign last month. Since the other DMs have never done it before, they are still adjusting to the process. One specific DM has a problem with balancing combat. On my first session as a player, we faced a CR5 creature as 4 level 1 characters and then got saved by a deus ex machina which felt bad as a player. I would've been satisfied with the reality if we died facing a demon, but that's just me.
I do understand that that he's a beginner so I can't really blame him, he also is eager to improve. He kept asking for tips on how to balance an encounter, I can't really give a concrete answer because I have developed a sense for balance through experience. So I said what I often do, that he could still balance the encounter during combat and use the battle sim website to simulate encounters beforehand.
But just this week, he ran another session with a different 4 level 2 party and overtuned the combat again. We almost died and that felt bad because I know as a DM that we were severely outmatched and just lived due to the enemies changing tactics midfight. He admitted that he really struggled with balance, so I would like to ask the DMs of reddit for advice, how could he more effectively balance combat?
