First PC Death as a DM

Spoilers for Dragons of Stormwreck Isle

I 24(F) am a new dungeon master running a campaign (Dragons of Stormwreck Isle a with a twist [homebrewing certain things for added excitement]) for my partner and 6yr old son. Today was the last session in the Seagrow Caves and upon investigation my partners PC (Spores Druid) discovered that because of the residual energy in area B6/tomb of a dragon that there is a chance of ripples between the fire plane and material plane. His character being a spores druid and having a soft spot for the myconid people who dwell in the other areas of the cave decided he wanted to use thunder wave to seal it off. He sent my sons character out of the cave and unfortunately failed his dex saving throw to escape himself. As it was a cave of heavy rock he took 10d6 which would kill any 2nd level player. His character died a hero to the myconid people and it is a session that I don't think my 6yr old or myself will ever forget. With tears in my eyes, my sons PC and my NPCs bid dads character farewell.

Do you remember your first PC death as a DM? Was it heartbreaking as well? 🤣
