The one thing that always bugs me about this episode is Jim trying to ditch Pam when his plan to get both of them out falls through. It always seemed so out of character for him. Like this guy would leave the love of his life, whom he’s been chasing for years and finally landed, at the worlds worst dinner party alone because he just had to get out? Even as a joke or prank, that feels too cold for his character.
You’re getting downvoted, but you’re right
Yeah but leaving Pam in the house of her awful boss and his psycho lover, whom thinks Pam is after Michael, seems like a dick move.
Yes, but the former didn’t put his wife in harms way, and the latter was to save her from the anger of Michael dating her mom. He is self serving at times, but not at the expense of his wife.
I see what you’re saying, but how he would have then “put her mask on” is unclear since he’d no longer be at the party had his plan to leave worked. He did try to get both of them out first, but just saying “good luck” to Pam and turning his back on her just seems off brand for his character. Obviously Pam wouldn’t have been in any REAL danger, but also maybe, because Jan seriously thought Pam was after Michael.

That’s a valid point. I would argue that this move would elevate him from “haha I’m such a stinker” to actual douche territory but then later he buys his parents house without telling her, invests their savings in a long shot startup, and leaves her to take care of the kids.
That being said I don’t think Jim is a dick. I think that because the show started 17 years ago, our perspective as an audience has changed over the years. Things that seemed playful then now feel awkward and vindictive. Whole culture and all that jazz
