Many times in the office we hear the words "Steamtown." Steamtown mall, Michael handing out jello shots at the 23rd mile of the steamtown marathon. I have always wondered its connection to Scranton/The Office. Today I made the connection. In one episode Dwight is talking to Charles and says how Scranton quickly became one of the largest anthracite coal communities. Another time Michael wants to take all the workers to the coal mine elevator as a surprise. When you burn coal as a fuel source it creates steam. If Scranton was originally a coal mining community, it makes complete sense that it became so populated because its original name was "Scranton the Steamtown. " Discuss. *drops mic
