Hello all, I am looking for a handheld thermal imaging device. I know next to nothing about them and my google research tells me that there is a wide market for many different applications and a lot of language I donât really understand or is difficult to translate into what I would actually experience with it in the field. I am looking for education/recommendations.
My context: Iâm a duck/goose hunter who doesnât always have a dog available and I canât stand the thought of downing a bird and losing it in the field because they are so well camouflaged I could be standing 5 feet away and not see it.
I wouldnât be using the thermal application to scope the horizon, mount it to a firearm for shooting or use during nighttime. I really donât even need the super clarity to id a bird, just locate it. I see myself using it after shots have been fired, scoping where I think it dropped, getting to the area and âlookâ around to eventually narrow down and retrieve said bird.
Iâm not looking for anything fancy. I donât need to record anything or take pics. Something handheld and durable enough that can fit in my hunting bag and lastly I donât want to break the bank. Thanks for any help on this.
Flir makes a handheld for like $500 as do other manufacturers.

How so? Using it to recover game shouldnât be an issue most places.
