Helping a buddy decide on ammo selection, looking at the Winchester Xpert steel loads to get the rebates. Both of us are newish to duck hunting and much to learn. The research I’ve done is more on the bismuth side so could use some advice on steel. I’m in the lower velocity/smaller shot/higher pellet count camp. The other guy in our group is more like 3in #2, 1550 fps or higher is The Only Way.
We’re expecting to shoot in the decoys inside of 40 yds. Mallards, gadwalls, widgeon, woodies, and probably teal early. Also my buddy isn’t the greatest shot either.
2.75in 1400fps 1 1/8oz #4s is what I’m leaning towards. Also available in the same with #2 and #3s. Pellet count with #2s is too low IMO. Would #4s hold sufficient velocity/kinetic energy to kill ethically? Are #3s the better, just right Goldilocks choice?
Can also get 3in, 1400fps, 1 1/4oz, in the same shot sizes, but the pellet count percentage increase is only about 10%. I’d rather shoot the softer loads, and he’s using a pump action.
So what’s the right shot size given the above? Thx!
Shoot the 4’s in 2 3/4”. I’ve killed everything from teal, to large late season Canada geese with loads like that. I’ve since switched to bismuth, because I get way less cripples.
