I’m hunting Canadian Geese and Mallards for the first time and I’m not sure what shells to use. I’ve read about steel, bismuth and others in variations but I’m not sure what is best
How deep are your pockets? Steel<bismuth<tungsten blends<tss.
Steel-cheapest, readily available, needs larger shot size for penetration.
Bismuth-great performance for the cost, #4 bismuth will hit like steel #1’s, ability to use smaller shot=more pellets =denser patters, can choke it tighter, safe for antique guns.
Tungsten Blends- hits harder than bismuth, more penetration at longer range, can go down to size 5 or 6 shot and be effective still, again smaller shot=denser patterns.
TSS- ultimate in performance at the sacrifice of affordability, box of shells will set you back $70-$100 for a 12ga, can go down to shot size 8 and still effectively kill birds at stupid range like 70yds or better. Can combat the extreme price by shooting smaller gauges such as 28ga or 410 and be just as effective as a 12ga shooting bismuth. Less shot = cheaper shells.
