For the mechanics in the audience:
Went to start my motorcycle after letting her sit for a few weeks. The starter motor clicked over once then stopped making any noise. The lights come on and after a bunch of tests I'm certain it's not the battery.
So far I've swapped out the battery (it was fine), checked the relay (impedance test, it's fine), checked for voltage getting to the starter (it gets power), push started the bike (started right up).
I went to the mechanic and his advice was "bang on the starter with a mallet, sometimes the brushes get stuck". I did that and BINGO, it turned over - but just once. If I keep banging on it it keeps turning over.
So what's the deal? Do I need a new starter, or new brushes? What's the protocol for pulling a starter out? Whats the procedure for removing the starter motor?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated, thank you so much for your help.
