I have had dry eyes since child hood. When using contacts, the eyes became really inflamed. I was at around 18 when dry eyes was diagnosed. Looking back, I had it way longer. Some pictures I can see my eyes squinting. Also I remember moments when I was around 4 that I didn't wanna go play outside, cause it was sunny and my eyes bothered me. I never thought anything weird of it, but it caused a lot of discomfort.
Surprising part is that it is not normal procedure to look further here to see what kind of issues might be behind the dryness. I tried to get things tested, but it all was on my initiative (Sjogrens, Thyroid, etc).
