I (28F) found a bottle. At first he (28M) was mad that I was "snooping" but it was relatively out in the open. He's been getting them (illegally) from a coworker. He used to be prescribed them a long time ago but now doesn't want to go to a professional for a prescription because it's expensive.

He claims to only take half a pill, so .25mg I think? Supposedly a couple times a week. So I figure 1-3x/week. He says he only takes it before stressful work meetings and other occasions that might be very anxiety-producing. He says he isn't abusing them and that would be stupid, to take them recreationally because then he would run out & wouldn't have them when he really needs them.

This is coming from a guy that had a drinking problem and our relationship of 2 years has been full of lies (primarily about substance abuse)

Is this reasonable? Is it possible to take such small doses only once-a few times a week and not become dependent? Or can you become addicted taking that small of a dose? Can he really self-monitor or isn't this something that should be monitored by a professional?
