I really don’t think this is going to benefit him in any way/shape/form. My dad has stage 4 lung cancer that has spread to his liver, the chemo didn’t work and the cancer has progressed. He’s in hospice now (at-home hospice) and just got prescribed 5mg oxycodone for his pain.
Up until this point, he has refused any pain meds, because he used to be addicted to hydrocodone. He would take around 20 pills a day, 10mg each, and was able to quit, then got diagnosed with cancer, and he didn’t want any pain meds because he didn’t want to get hooked on them again.
Flash forward to now, realistically, do any of you think only 5mg will even do anything? Or even if it does, I don’t know if there’s a chance of him getting hooked on it again?
Shit, I made the mistake myself of relapsing after being sober for awhile, I thought to myself “2 more pills won’t hurt” then ended up taking 15 a day for months. This is a different scenario tho, as he’s quite literally bedridden and can’t walk or get up by himself and my mom gives him his meds unless hospice nurse is here.
Another thing I’d like to add: they literally JUST prescribed the 5mg oxycodone today, an hour ago, and since he didn’t want opioids for the last 5-6 months of his battle with cancer, he was taking ibuprofen 800mg for pain, which helped. The hospice team notified us that they don’t want him taking the ibuprofen anymore (because of something to do with a steroid he’s on, can cause liver failure) so this was kind of the last resort so-to-speak.
