How to tell if my friend is using opiates
Post Body

Hi, I don't know if this is the right place for asking this, but I was recently dating someone who I suspect may be using heroin or some other opiate. My concern is not so much that they are using but that they may be indulging in activities that can harm them and others around them (such as driving under influence).

So a couple of nights ago they came to pick me up and we were supposed to go to a dive bar for a date. As soon as I got in the car I noticed that their eyes were weird: kinda half shut. I thought it could be coz they were smoking weed. As we started driving, they brakes too close to a car and almost hit them. Then they tried to speedily overtake a moving streetcar when there was basically no space between the streetcar and the car parked in the parking lane. We made it, but I was genuinely concerned.

We got to the bar and my date seemed really happy, seemingly loving the bar, enjoying the music. We had some good laughs drank some beers, kissed and cuddled. At some point they go to the washroom. They come back, and I think nothing of it. But then soon after they go again and I find it weird. I know that drinking beer makes you wanna pee a lot, but it was more the way they did it. They just averted my gaze and mumbled "excuse me" and left. Came back after a very long time, so at this point I'm suspecting something isn't right. When they come back, their energy level is significantly low. They're standing at the bar and just nodding off, their eyes basically closed. I'm trying to talk to them but they're barely listening and just keep nodding off. At one point I firmly ask if they're okay. They mumble they're extremely tired (which is odd coz during our car ride they were just telling me how they had a very restful 11 hour sleep the night before and all day they were at home chilling). Then they decide they wanna go home and I'm like, okay but I wanna finish my beer first. They say they're gonna go out, smoke a cigarette and wait for me in the car. I'm like dude you can't drive, but they say they're fine and leave.

In a couple of minutes I finish my beer and go out to join them. I see that they have pulled up in front of the bar and they are passed out in the driver's seat with their head on the steering wheel. The lights in the car are on and music is playing. I go over and knock on the windows. No answer. I'm pretty terrified at this moment. I try the driver's side door and it opens, which is when they wake up. In the meantime, someone outside the bar sees all this and reports it to the bartender who comes out and takes away their keys. We're all trying to convince them that they can't drive. Everyone at the bar is super nice, offering to call them an Uber even though they're telling. Eventually they yell at me coz they think I told the bartender about them and storm out. I chase after them coz I wanna make sure they get home okay, but they're just yelling at me and not having it. At some point I give up and leave.

It just terrifies me that someone that effed up could be driving on the streets putting people's lives on danger. I don't know what they were on, but I'm certain it wasn't just weed and alcohol. I'm just wondering if all this sounds like they were on heroin or meth or something, because I've read that the nodding-off effect is quite common with opiates.

I'm not judging them or other people who use, but I'm just wondering that if this is the case I should try and do something about it so that they stay safe and don't harm others.
