Taking too much of a benzo leads to longer effects?

I noticed that every time I took a therapeutic dose of Ativan like 1mg, I didn't feel anything next morning or much longer than the drug's duration. But with abusive doses like 3mg the effect are felt much longer, extending to the drug's half life. Does anyone else experience this with this class of drugs, especially with longer half-life benzos like diazepam?
